aka kempen ‘Untukmu, Sheepwoman’ (bahagian kedua)
i have never had nasi daun pisang. ever. i first knew of this rice dish from images of lat’s (yeah, lat’s cartoons has influenced of my outlook on the world around from an early age. really.) description of a mountain of rice and kuah lapan belas macam. i was invited by anuar the ex-madrileño currently working in KL, and we were joined by iJun, who happened to be in town, and shidah. the elitist is on the plane from LHR at the time of writing, otherwise having him around would almost make the nahar kafe group complete. kan, sheepwoman, kan? i also had the pleasure to be introduced to khaylis. it all began to look like the dreaded B-word meeting!
anuar took us to sri nirwana maju in the upmarket telawi precinct of bangsar. being wesak day, it was filled to the brim but we were ushered to a newly set up table in no time. i knew what i’d like (unimaginatively, the ayam goreng – you can’t go wrong with ayam goreng). everyone then had a leaf neatly placed on the table and they laid out cucumbers (bleurgh), chutney (bleurgh) and spicy deep-fried aubergines (ok). i only had one type (they had three) of kuah (gallons of it, though) and once the ayam goreng arrived, i was in heaven, although i have to admit i did feel that it is just your bog standard rice, really.
that slight-ish disappointment aside, nothing beats tucking into great grub with good friends around you.
eeee timun. tamau.
NO NO NO NO!!! This is wrong! Nasi daun pisang in Bangsar??!!!! Dude, you’re too yuppie for your own good. Lmsn and I go to the source i.e. Brickfields to get our fix. And the last time we went, they peppered bunga melur on the floor to greet us. Now that’s something.
i knew it.
Don’t knock the place man, food’s pretty bitchin. Also the waiter very the class punya, kena charkap england artau dia teedak farham.
(Where in brickfields exactly?)
Idlan, timun is optional. And you’re just jealous.
I am only jealous because YOU never take me there.
Aiyoh…mane boleh makan nasi daun pisang in bangsar? It’s like eating nasi lemak in bukit bintang. Try Naga’s (or something like that) in Brickfields.
Hahahah Kudo, have you been LaCucur’ed? Hahaha
I tell you, tempat ni sedap! I actually wanted to take them to Kanna’s in PJ but 1) Couldn’t remember how to get there and 2) can’t cross the street after the coma-inducing lunch for some coffee.
Now, where’s this place in brickfields? And do they have ghee thosai? All this talk of curry and stuff brings out the Jamak in me.
ya it was also my first time having banana leaf rice. i was expecting “party-in-my-mouth-and-everybody-is-invited” but it felt more like “doing-the-macarena-with-your-kid-niece”.
kudo this sunday gi brickfields for the real thing jom!
p/s: gila tak flattering gambar aku tgh kunyah! next time let me swallow first ok?
Ladies & Gents, we have established that Ijun swallows.
idlan: org dah belanja takkan nak impose aku punya non-bourgeois beliefs. nasib baik aku sakit psl hari ni i was supposed to have lunch at…. (drum roll)… alexis, bangsar.

Well said.
anuarF: Don’t matter where in Brickfields. But only in the ‘fields will you find utter gastronomic bliss via the laluan lapan lapis daun pisang. Hahahahaa… Search for a big Globe Silk Store-type establishment sporting the words ‘BOMBAY POINT’ in neon lettering on its topmost floor. Across from it is a bunch of shops serving nasi daun pisang. I can’t recall the name of the exact one I prefer, but my Dad was the one who introduced me to the place. And it seems that most Dads know of this particular street and its daun pisang specialty.
And come on, guys… It was no contest the minute I told you about the ‘BOMBAY POINT’ in neon lettering bit, kan? 😉 Leave Bangsar be for the tourists and 15-year olds who really think Sanjaya is going to make it big one day. Fat people go to BRICKFIELDS!
kalau kau dah ke alexis bangsar tu Kudo… beyond reproach…
SEMPOORNA Restaurant… that’s the name of our joint. 😉
who’s sanjaya?
idlan: i won’t be eating nasi kerabu at alexis lah, don’t you worry.
at least member wa sorang ni bawak belanja wa nasi, yang lain tu? hahahahaha.
did you know…?
… that after eating nasi daun pisang, u r supposed to fold it towards u if u like it and fold it away from u if u don’t? (kuiz murahan untuk yg tau makan je tapi tak tau pasal the culture behind it) 🙂
shit, i always fold it away from me!
haha, i knew that! tapi would fold it away anyway takut any leftover kuah banjir tumpah : )
so kalau tak fold langsung how? kira belum habis makan is it?
wow such a fuss over banana leaf rice. i’m grateful to anuarF for actually taking the time to take us there rather than just talk about a place which might not even exist anymore. thanks dude!
hear hear.
bangsar? brickfields? have y’all tried leboh ampang?
eh, i LOVE that daun pisang place in bangsar la (altho i never knew the name of the place)…wanted to try out brickfields for what i assumed would be more authentic, but nantilah. i’ll it on to my to-do list.
