oh the weather outside is frightful
but the fire is so delightful
and since we’ve no place to go
let it snow! let it snow! let it snow!
-i like the dean martin version (think die hard)
i’ve seen enough.
heck, i was already here the last time it was bad. i remember walking back from the medical school library to my flat at ricky road in a snowstorm, like the one luke had to face after the wampa encounter and before seeing the spectre of ben kenobi telling him to hightail his ass off to dagobah for some training shit.
not trying to rain on anyone’s parade (rain would be good here – it’ll mean the snow’s melting), but while it’s fun and games for some (have you seen photos on facebook lately?), it’s shitty enough to try get to work in this kind of weather. i was told cars were slaloming down into abbey lane near beauchief yesterday afternoon. and travelling in the gridlock from the city centre to a suburb less than two miles took two hours.
sheffield’s had its fair share of snow no matter how mild it has been elsewhere in england, due to the fact it’s near the pennines. i was surprised how they didn’t manage to get the main roads gritted before yesterday afternoon’s late version of a white christmas (they were literally playing christmas songs again on the radio then!). hence, this morning saw me waiting for a late bus into town before catching a late train to work (at least they didn’t get cancelled). it was really bizarre to find abbeydale road so quiet at 7am (morning traffic would’ve started usually) that i swore you could literally hear a pin drop.
mind you, everything around the house looked pretty with the snow. let’s hope it gets warmer by friday as i don’t wanna be negotiating icy pavements outside london bridge tube station.
