singles was a film that came at the right moment, despite its rom-com leanings. i was in medical school in the thick of learning chords to come as you are, fancying this girl two years below and borrowing nik’s thick checkered coat trying to look like ed. and that was the first time i listened to this band led by this chap whirling his single dreadlock. like so:

sadly the tune was absent from the OST and it wasn’t until i bought the dirt CD (despite not owning a CD player until 3 years later) at HMV in nottingham after their malaysia nite that alice in chains got into a heavy rotation on my sony walkman (dubbed tapes were the shit then). that 7/8 time signature for them bones drove me nuts at first until it just came when play the riff. want to lose yourself, riff-wise? it’s just in the next track, dam that river. the ethereal rooster, the frust menonggeng down in a hole – i can go on. it was the right album for my state of mind at that moment.

perfect.
