in 1984, my parents taped a 30-minute pre-grammy award programme that was aired on telly, as i was away in boarding school. the tape was my introduction to the concept of the music video before MTV entered my household and obviously was played to death. it had only 5 songs in it – the police’s every breathe you take, billy joel’s uptown girl, culture club’s karma chameleon and michael jackson’s beat it and billie jean. to say that the white-socked, one-gloved moonwalker didn’t contribute to my interest in muzik would be a lie. rest in peace, yo.
