a long time ago in a flat in sandyford, i was watching the MTV music awards show on cable. this was one year after the time when i said, “tak pe lah… korang pegi lah. next time aje kot”, after being invited to go see kurt cobain and friends thrash their gear at the newcastle mayfair.
i was probably doing my ironing then, when i got to see pearl jam performing with neil “the godfather of grunge” young do rocking in the free world.
to this very day, i still think that was my best ever pearl jam moment. even a lil’ better than that summer in manchester five years ago. neil young was going berserk with his tremolo on his les paul deluxe. stone and mike wore the most horrendous seluar tidur onstage. ed looked like he was ever so dazed and couldn’t care less, singing along with neil, bottle of red by the mikestand. jeff hopping like a bunny rabbit on frickin’ LSD. and dave, the best PJ drummer ever, thrashing four cymbals with one hit despite his carpal tunnel syndrome. and to see a pre-steroid mike smashing his les paul black beauty on a 4 x 12″.
beat that.
so, what’s your best pearl jam / [*insert your fav band here*] moment?
Audioslave live. No specific moment. You know wot I mean.
Have you watched the Radiohead set at Glasto 2003? There was this one, almost magical, moment in the middle of 2+2=5 when Yorkie sputtered this big, juicy, gob of saliva onto his Tele.
And when I say it’s big, I really mean it. It’s not like satu/dua titik ayaq leeyoq, dude. We’re talking like semangkuk kinda thing.
dave? dave krusen is the best drummer? nah, if youre talking about dave abbruzzese (not sure about spelling tho) ..then, maybe. but i think matt cameron is doing a superb job behind the kit with pj now. hes so underrated.
whoa… wait a sec!
in my book, matt is the best PJ’s drummer! ever! but hey, it’s all subjective…
so,
dave = flair! matt = all except flair!
**dave = abruzesse
dave krusen only played live in a few shows. it was abruzzesse all the way til jack irons came along for no code.
this show was in 1993.
All PJ shows are great moments – I’ve only been to three. Each got crappy seats, each time I’ll say “But Eddie can’t see me!” (heh, like any self-respecting narcissist would).
A memorable one would be Detroit 2003, when Eddie came out before the opening band and sang something I forgot because I was rushing rushing down as close as I could get to him and snapped a picture. Hah!
And this year’s concert at the Gorge when I finally heard Black live! I can die a happy woman now. And Low Light too! Awesome.
P/s: Dave/matt, didn;t make much diff to me. But I think a different kind of energy was in the band when Jack Irons was around. It’s a pity he had to leave.
best PJ moments?
sitting 2 feet away from Mike´s side at all 6 shows ive been to. PJ nirvana i tell ya…seniority in TEN club does wonders i tell ya…
BUT the most memorable show for me would be Alpine Valley, Milwaukee in 2000. it was tailend of summer and it was actually 15 degrees!! everyone, including the band, wore thick winter clothing. eddie looked liked a fire breathing dragon, the band was tight and only played a lot of their rockier songs just to keep everyone jumping and warm!! excellent.
Duuudeeee…Alpine Valley 98 was my first PJ concert ever. I remember the first song they played was “Corduroy” – ‘the waiting drove me mad’ -indeed, and the last song was “Smile” – ‘I miss you already’. I felt like they were reading my mind. My first concert in the middle of the corn fields..it was surreal.
