my jet lag has subsided. somewhat. not really fit for out-of-town soirées on school nights really, which i found out late tuesday night on the northbound M1. unlike my previous post-KL months, i don’t really have an all-melayu playlist on my iTunes anymore. probably because i know i’ll be back sooner rather than later this time.
this is also the time for me to play that all-famous game of catch up. i’ve caught up on bleach and heroes (the final episode was on astro just as i was leaving for KLIA – quickly reached for the remote to shut the telly when i saw it!). that leaves an array of films at the multiplex which i haven’t watched yet. fantastic 4, pirates 3, die hard. actually wanted to check out my luscious keira pirates last night, but damn pottermania – there was nary a parking space in sight. the bastards. yeah, need to watch that, too.

the last three months unexpectedly saw me finishing a few books. earlier, i enjoyed the true-to-life antics of dina zaman’s i am muslim followed by the reluctant politician (a must-read for all taman tun-ites!). i got myself kam raslan’s confessions of an old boy: the dato’ hamid adventures. i’ve read some of his stuff in celebrations and when he used to write for men’s review. anyone with an uncle who went to the malay college before 1957 would believe in the hapless bon viveur character kam created (some people did think dato’ hamid was real). kam’s seamless parodies of upper class malaysians was quite enjoyable, to say the least. bibliobibuli has reviewed it nicely here.
next was murakami’s latest offering translated into english, after dark (アフターダーク). a thinner tome as compared to kafka, yet it was murakami at his surreal best, describing a tale of the relationship of two sisters, all in one intriguing night. with a dash of some love hotel action (of the wrong kind), a jazz jam and chinese mafia shenanigans. again, i just rode it. wasn’t one for trying to think or analyse too much. i just enjoyed the weirdness of it.
what happened to the safran foer read in april? it’s in a parcel on its way from KL, together with some other books and CD’s i bought.
hey ur reading list reads like my reading list! well somesort lah, if you count the reluctant politician (which is still on my wish list) and take out confessions (off putting cover. what can i say? i’m just shallow like that)
“again, i just rode it. wasn’t one for trying to think or analyse too much. i just enjoyed the weirdness of it.”
yeah, i totally do that when i’m reading murakami, even tho i’m such a fan, i never really try to reason it out or find the hidden meanings. not too much of a fan of how his ‘tomes’ are getting thinner and thinner while his prices are getting higher and higher… hey a 1 pound hike is 7 ringgit tau! i
that murakami was bought in kino. 20% off as i bought another book with it. and i used my british debit card. much cheapness after conversion. muahahaha. 😀
Eh, boleh guna debit card UK ek in Kino? Maestro or Visa Debit?
visa yo.
yeah i bought it for 20% off at kino too~! was jumping for joy when i saw it, cos i didnt know the hard cover was out. i usually wait for the paperback version. yeah.. nampak gaya this hard core fan’s core not so hard. wat to do, i’m still a cheapskate =P
Reluctant Politician = good
I Am Muslim = great
Confessions of an Old Boy = mega
extra brownie points if you can get your copies signed by the authors.
Three very good stuff from local authors, mind. This is too much!!! 🙂
Am hunting for a copy of Adibah Amin’s As I Was Passing.
