I love my 13″ MacBook – it was my major first Apple purchase (I had an iPod classic then but somehow an iPod is not considered major enough to count. Heh.), and it is black. At that time, white was the mainstay of Apple colours. Pity they discontinued the black ones in 2008. Heck, they discontinued the MacBook period a year later as we now have the MacBook Pro.

Mine is a mid-2007 model and after five years I think it still is doing just fine, considering what I do with it. Before my iMac, the black MacBook was the platform for my first foray in hassle-free video editing. Why hassle-free? Despite being a quadcore machine, my PC’s Windows MovieMaker keep crashing (ori ye, bukan underwater). However, iMovie ’09 (it still is on the MacBook) starts to slow down when I’ve the internet/Skype/iTunes running in the background. With 1GB of memory whaddaya expect? It got worse when I finally upgraded to Mac OSX Snow Leopard. I was hesitant to upgrade to Lion as the old MacBook’s touchpad ain’t built for multitouch gestures unless I buy a Magic Mouse or Trackpad. Furthermore, Lion needs at least 2GB of memory which I don’t have. Mountain Lion? Heh.

The battery finally KO-ed earlier this year and I finally got around to replace it. And since the MacBook’s got a new lease of life, why not upgrade the memory so that multitasking won’t be a nightmare anymore. According to the official Apple support page, the mid-2007 MacBook can go up to 2GB, but thanks to my friend’s recommendation, crucial.com tells me I can go up to 4GB! I wonder if iJun will tell me this old laptop can go up to 16GB.

The pair of 2GB chips came to about fifty-odd quid which is quite reasonable in my books and they arrived two days ago. As for installing them, YouTube is just excellent – found a tutorial vid and the MacBook’s memory has gone from 1GB to 4GB in less than 10 minutes. Ta-daah!
