Week 4 was short as Monday was a Bank Holiday. Continuing from where I left off:

DAY 20
As described in the last update, some electrical work was done, which comprised connecting the ovens and extractor, as well as installing the sockets on the wall and the tall cabinet housing the combi boiler. The switches/plugs for the ovens, the washing machine and the soon-to-arrive plinth heater were also installed. The washing machine was fitted in position and plumbed. By the electrician!

DAYS 21-22
No work as it was the Bank Holiday weekend. However, I decided on what I’d like as the splashback, measured the area needed and bought them at a shop pretty much 5 minutes drive from the house. Also, I spent a few quid at IKEA.

DAY 23
Ordered a butcher’s block/metal trolley online from IKEA. LED downlighters installed. Totally bowled over, as the kitchen is the most well-illuminated room in the house!

New skirting boards installed. Also, the French doors for the side project had arrived. And the CORGI-certified plumber connected the Smeg hob. We now have fire!

DAY 24
The kitchen window was brought down a few inches following the discussion had on day 16. Wooden window cill[1] installed. Meanwhile, demolition of the outer wall beneath the large dining hall window commenced. Basically the side project is opening up the dining hall window into French doors that open up into the decking in the backyard. The French doors are also UPVC, in grey and contain double-glazed glass.

DAY 25
The dining hall window demolition was completed. The French doors installed and with the double glazing a tad tinted, they look pretty classy to boot.

I initially thought this was a relatively easy job, until I saw the energy entailed to do the whole thing. Having to demolish the original 100-year old cill was a tad heartbreaking, but it weighs a ton, figuratively.

DAY 26
The edges around the French doors were smoothed using plasterboard. Outside and inside steps fabricated, with the outside one made of decking. Pointing done around lowered kitchen window. Brushed metal sockets, one with USB, installed. As for the junk collecting in my backyard, a skip will be arranged the following week.

DAYS 27-28
No work. It’s the weekend. Again. Picked up mosaic tiles. Arranged for the blinds people to come do a measurement the following trip. IKEA trip to obtain drawer storage solutions for the trolley, as well as other bits and bobs.

Most importantly, cooked the first ever meal in this fully armed and operational battle sta… never mind.

つづく。
