In recent years to this very day, I’ll be in front of the PC with the iTunes running, doing the same thing. [I would like to add an interesting observation that kids today (uhuk uhuk) don’t do separates anymore. Heh.] It may not have the same clarity but it made no difference when I’m chord/riff-hunting. I rip my CDs to 160 kbps mp3 anyway (I don’t bother with 320 kbps as I want as much stuff on the iPod). Also, when I drive, I probably don’t pay as much attention to clarity as compared to sitting comfortably at home in front of the hi-fi.
I was wrong. It did make a difference when I had the CDs back on last night (the car actually has a dang good system actually). At home, the hi-fi is still up and running after 15 years, although I can detect mild fluctuations in the volume sometimes. Strangely enough, in those years I never have once bought speakers (the floorstanders I have are freeeeeeeeeeeee), and I may just look up What HiFi? Sound and Vision to see what’s hot these days.
I have not forsaken mp3 technology though. I still hate portable CD players.

I actually hook up my laptop to separates. Or rather, I used to. Until my separates died. Maybe a visit to richer sounds is pending
