Music selection has been pretty retro these past couple of weeks.
First up is Queen. For some reason or other, I forgot to add this glam rock supremos in my old skool playlist on my iTunes / iPod. I also managed to procure a copy of the News of the World vinyl from 1977 (number 10 of the top ten Queen albums voted by MOJO).
Next up is an array of 1980’s music. I was caught in the new wave frenzy of the early 80’s, much to my dismay (thank god for my discovery of all things rock when I turned 16!). I don’t know what triggered this trip into memory lane. Muat-turuned a few of the New Romantic hits II never got to really listen to, like A Flock of Seagull‘s I Ran and Visage‘s Fade to Grey.
Duran Duran was the band of that era, hands down. I have to say despite the ponciness of their synth-based post-punk (funnily enough, that is how new wave music was referred to as) music, it sounded rocking live (note to Trabye – As the Lights Go Down was actually a promo, hence the inavailability of the video/DVD). I actually saw them (the original lineup with the three Taylors) live two years ago… err, lots of women there. 30-odd year old women. Whaddaya expect? I’ll probably do a retrospective review of the gig soon (I’ve got a few other old gigs that I’d love to write reviews on as well, so watch this space).

So, there it is. Pity France’s non-victory was further marred by Zidane’s kambing incident with tit-twisting (?) Materazzi. It was a good evening for the Italians, although it would’ve been better if it wasn’t won the way it was tonight. 1994 could’ve happened again! Forza Azzuri nonetheless.
guess what… in the mid-80’s i styled myself in then so-called ‘new wave’ jugak: rambut sikat tepi tutup mata sebelah, baju putih, seluar hitam kaki kecik, kasut hitam + stokin putih (wacko the jacko nye style). a few years ago, simon le bon came along his wife yasmin to my alma mater’s end of year arch show, pasal ayah yasmin tu, encik raj, keje as pakcik yg buat printing at my arch school and he was retiring that year. so, school jemput simon as vip to open the show lah. dah habis tu… nampak simon dok lepak kat bawah pokok sebelah our building, muka bored gilerr. i pun gi lah, mintak autograph on the programme booklet. i think he was annoyed pasal i kacau dia dok lopong…. he wrote ‘whooosssh’ and signed his name. cilakak. i still keep that booklet.

good one, that.
[…] the post-punk movement brought upon music otherwise known as new wave in early 1980’s britain. malaysians called it diskang (bastardisation of the word disco). as atok astutely described, the diskang look was… shall i say, unique. i could remember ah bengs at wisma punce emas, then seremban’s prime shopping mall, in the largest carrot-cut trousers with only a 12″ circumference at the bottom sporting large nick rhodes-like permed bouffants. it has always been the case that yesterday’s fashion is looked down upon. i remembered how people took the mickey at 70’s fashion, but hey – this decade has its fair share of reviving the 70’s look. since things happen on a decade-by-decade basis, i’m not really looking forward to 2010. thankfully enough, no one looked that cringeworthy when duran duran came to town a few months back.
