After the meal, we had a short stroll at the Bay, enjoying the expected angin sepoi-sepoi bahasa before heading back to the hotel located a few miles west of the city. The hotel is fantastic for the amount of money I paid. It felt 4★ alright (I’m tired of ending up in hotels that are actually one or two ★’s less than advertised). Brekkie the next morning was gorgeous and the nephew got to eat for free. I highly recommend the place, it’s pretty much in the top 10 for hotels in the Vale of Glamorgan on tripadvisor and kid-friendly/golfer-friendly. I chose Cardiff Castle for our next stop as: 1. I’ve a sis-in-law who’s really into medieval history (I did think of Caernarfon but that’s kinda off the beaten track at this point in time) 2. the nephew gets to exercise his legs, as did his uncle pretending to carry a steadicam for the holiday vid.

Oxford was expensive, as expected. As this was my umpteenth visit to the city of dreaming spires, I brought them on the quick tourist circuit that included the curio shops before heading off to this village 9 miles north-east of the city for some retail therapy. As it wasn’t mid-July yet (and it wasn’t a weekend), there weren’t that many Malaysian families (or about-to-be-engaged/married couples looking to buy hantaran items) about. I love a good bargain and a strong believer in the “if I can get the SAME item cheaper here, why should I waste money” adage. Who gives a toss about being in season when it’ll be out of season next week.
