Well, finally Google Map’s return to iOS. Tried it out in the car today and I’ve to say it’s pretty much the same as Apple Maps function-wise. One helpful feature not present in the Apple one is the added info of traffic conditions. I was informed of the slightly longer time that it’d take to reach home due to the foggy conditions we were gonna face on the M18/M1.

The voice in the turn-by-turn nav option is female but I’m not too happy with the Imperial system used. As for the map’s appearance itself, I prefer Apple’s especially the neat blue boxes that look like roadsigns on British roads. Of course, Google doesn’t have the 3-D Flyover feature but since I don’t live in London nor San Francisco it’s no consequence to me whatsoever. Not being an Android user, I guess I will be missing out on the downloadable mods (like changing the voice to Darth Vader’s) available for this app on the Apple iOS.

I’ve restarted my self-directed learning of conversational Japanese. After, err… TWO years. It’d be nice if by the end of this (whenever that’ll be) I’d be able to forego subs. Well, not when I’ve just got to the part of learning かきくけこ and がぎぐげご! I have discovered how to type in hiragana/kanji on OSX (no more cut and pasting w00t!) which I think can help a bit as I can see the letters which helps me remembering them a lot.

Whilst the book is excellent, I have also opted to learn extra basic bits from my Lonely Planet phrasebook on my iPhone. がんばります!

This weekend, I hope.
